Faith @ First - September 5, 2025
This week we’re kicking off a brand-new series: Faith and Football. When I first told one of my girlfriends about it, she laughed and asked, “What do you know about football?” I had to admit: not much. But here’s the thing—I’m learning. And that, I believe, is the very first lesson worth sharing.
I’m almost 40 years old. I’ve been in church all my life. I’ve studied Scripture deeply, pastored local churches and served as a denominational leader. But the truth is, I’m still learning. I’m still discovering. I’m still growing. And what’s most surprising? I’m still seeing God show up in people, places, and yes—even sports—that I never expected.
That’s the hope and challenge of discipleship. Following Jesus is not about having all the answers or checking off a spiritual to-do list. It’s about staying open—open to new lessons, fresh insights, and unexpected encounters with God’s presence. Just as a football team keeps practicing, adapting, and striving for improvement, we too are called to keep pressing forward in our walk of faith.
Maybe you’re in a stage of life that feels settled or predictable. Maybe you think you’ve seen it all or learned it all. But what if God still has more to show you? What if there’s a new skill to practice, a new perspective to gain, or a new playbook for your spiritual growth? So, here’s the question: how can you remain open to learning something new from God this season?
Join us for worship this Sunday as we take the field together. Let’s discover what lessons faith and football can teach us—and how God might surprise us along the way.
Pray with me: Lord, thank You for being our coach and guide in life. Keep our hearts open, our minds teachable, and our spirits ready for the new lessons You have for us. Help us to grow in faith as we take the field each day with You. Amen.
P.S. Enjoy this picture when my family watched the annual Thanksgiving Lions game. My brother (a DIE-HARD Lions fan) was appalled at my lack of gear. I am now the proud owner of a jersey from every Detroit sports team- courtesy of him!
Keep the Faith at First,
