It happened in the middle of a Children’s Moment, the kind of moment you can’t plan but never forget. We were talking about Easter morning, about the women who came to the tomb and found the stone rolled away. I asked the kids, “What do you think the first people at the tomb said when they saw it was empty?”

A young girl raised her hand with confidence and declared, “What the heck is going on?!” The sanctuary burst into laughter—immediately followed by knowing nods. Because honestly? That might be the most genuine, Spirit-filled response to Easter I’ve ever heard.

What the heck is going on?

Resurrection doesn’t play by the rules. It interrupts our expectations. It surprises us, unsettles us, and invites us into something far bigger than we imagined. That Easter morning, no one had it all figured out. The women were taken aback. The disciples were scared. The risen Christ showed up anyway—meeting them right in their uncertainty with peace, presence, and purpose.

That child’s response has stuck with me all week. Because aren’t there moments in all our lives when we find ourselves asking the same thing? When a job changes, or grief lingers, or a new door opens and we’re not sure what’s on the other side. In those moments, we can feel like we’re standing at the entrance of a tomb—something ending, something beginning—and wondering, “What now?”

This Sunday, as we wrap up our Led by the Spirit worship series, we’ll reflect on what does it mean to be led into purpose in a world that often feels uncertain or overwhelming? How do we listen for the Spirit’s whisper and trust that even in our “what the heck is going on” moments, resurrection is already at work.
